Reece Lumsden began his career with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1998 as an Electrical Engineering Officer (ENGO), after completing a Bachelors degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Western Australia (UWA) in 1997. After serving 14 months at RAAF base Williamtown with the Ground Telecommunications Equipment Logistics Management Squadron (GTELMSQN), he was accepted to the International Space University (ISU) in Strasbourg, France, to undertake a Masters of Space Studies (MSS). From 1999 to 2000 his studies at ISU saw him spend time completing his masters thesis on control systems design for Advanced Life Support Systems (ALSS) with the Intelligent Systems Group at the NASA Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas. Reece was awarded the Young Professional Engineer of the Year by the ACT Division of Engineers Australia in 2002.

Upon his return from ISU, Reece was assigned to Air Force Headquarters (AFHQ), Canberra, Australia, in the newly created Future Space Concepts (FSC) directorate where he assisted with various military space matters. Assignments undertaken during this posting included a secondment to the joint US/Australia Global Hawk Unmanned Aerial Vehicle trials and short exposures to the FEDSAT and JAESAT mini-satellite projects. He was then posted to the Directorate of Defence Information  Environment Architecture Support (DDIEAS), to assist with Defence's utilisation of Enterprise Architectures (EA) for  capability determination. Reece concluded his service with the RAAF in September 2002, and founded Lumsden Consulting in February 2003.

In 2004 Reece became an Associate of Athena Global, a Canadian based management consultancy. During his time with Athena Global, he co-authored the Athena Global Earth Observation Guide 2005, which was peer reviewed by the Head of Space and Technology Issues for US Congressional Research and peer reviewed by, author of the Cambridge guide to Space, leading UK Space consultant, Mark Williams, featured in the Nov/Dec Space Times.

Upon receipt of US Permanent residency in 2004, Reece relocated to San Francisco in March 2005 to further engage with the Space community.

Aside from his space related interests, Reece is involved with several other entrepreneurial activities in various technology fields, most notably the recent start-up Tek-talk, is currently studying for an MBA in Technology Management with the Chifley Business School and La Trobe University and was accepted to the Doctoral program in Aerospace Science with the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain.

Reece holds a 2nd dan black belt in WTF Taekwondo and also enjoys running and swimming to stay fit.
